Having a lark at Mondello Park

Having a lark at Mondello Park

Earlier this month the Club Chairman, Alastair and myself decided that we would take a spin down to Mondello Park to join members of AROCI at their annual track day.

Our friends in AROCI have been very supportive of our annual All Ireland Italian Motor Event in recent years so it was appropriate that we made the effort to pay them a visit and enjoy the thrills (and hopefully not too many spills) of watching them throw their Alfas round the track at Mondello Park.

This year was the biggest turnout yet and there was an impressive range of Alfa Romeos, old and new. It was a well run event with the cars heading out onto the track for a sighting lap before they split into smaller numbers and different categories to enjoy the adrenalin rush of taking their cars round a proper racing circuit.

Some folk were definitely squeezing  the right pedal pretty hard and put in some spirited laps. Other participants were content to cruise round at a slightly more sedate pace in keeping with the character of their cars.  It was pleasing to see a good variety of Alfas, especially some which are becoming rare sights such as the Alfa 75, 145 and 155.

The welcome from Dave Kennedy, Brendan Delaney, Gerry Campbell, Myles O’Reilly and many others was warm and genuine and we were grateful for the hospitality in the form of a BBQ, salads, with plenty of tea and coffee to wash down Brendan’s freshly basked fruit cake!!

A great day out which has certainly whet our appetite to combine forces with AROCI so that NIIMC members can participate next year.
